Google is working on a new, improved verification mode for Android 15 that will make it harder for malicious apps to gain sensitive permissions.

Google is reportedly working on a new feature for Android 15, Advanced confirmation mode, designed to improve the security of app installations. This feature builds on the existing “limited settingsn” feature introduced with Android 13.

Sideloading on Android

Sideloading on Android has always been quite easy, although Android has strict policies and security measures to prevent malicious apps from misusing user data. This is due to the app’s access to the APIs Accessibility And Notification Listener check.

Android expert Mishaal Rahman found out that Google is currently working on the development Advanced confirmation mode. This is a new feature designed to prevent abuse of Android’s session-based installation APIs. Android relies on this system to determine whether the app is downloaded from the Playstore or sideloaded. Additionally, Advanced Verification Mode will work with an allow list to determine whether certain apps need access to sensitive features, reports Android Police.

Improve data protection

The basis of this new function is the existing function Restricted settings which was introduced with Android 13. This prevents users from enabling accessibility or notification listener services for sideloaded apps. Restricting the functionality of third-party apps can improve data security.
