Climate change has ceased to be a denial by many people and has become a reality. Among all companies in the consumer electronics industry, Apple has made the fastest progress in reducing its carbon footprint. Xiaomi is also trying to follow in its footsteps.
Its purpose, as presented at the recent COP, Conference of the Parties and Annual Summit organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Achieving 0% carbon emissions by 2040.
Xiaomi’s roadmap to achieve 0% carbon emissions
global desire United Nations to reach 0% carbon emissions worldwide by 2050. There are 26 years left for this, but Xiaomi wants to reach this point earlier and its goal is carbon neutrality 10 years ago, in 2040.
And for this updated its goals and roadmap:
- By 2030 at the latest, “reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our core business segments to 39% of base year levels“.
- by 2035 “We use 100% renewable electricity in our own operations“
- by 2040“Achieving carbon neutrality internally
We use 100% clean heat and 100% renewable energy in our operations in our current operating segments.
- Prioritize the use of low-carbon technologies and self-built renewable energy production facilities, “Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity consumption through long-term green energy purchase agreements aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions on EU territory.”
- Incentivize key suppliers whereat “Set renewable energy usage and greenhouse gas emission reduction targets comparable to or more ambitious than Xiaomi’s to achieve company goals and continually reduce our Scope 3 emissions“.
Waste management and circular economy
Responsible end-of-life management of products at Xiaomi, “our transition to a circular economy and our efforts to minimize electronic waste.”. This effort includes intervention and innovation “across our entire value chain, from product design to life extension, reuse, recycling and disassembly”.
Xiaomi’s sustainability commitments
Aim, As Lei Jun himself commented on X (Twitter) achieve at the end of last year Carbon neutrality in facilities within 16 years by 2040. Looking at just 1 month is complicated because life changes from one day to the next. But undoubtedly this step is necessary, because if we are like this now, it is scary to know what the world will be like in fifteen years.
