The first meal in space was consumed during Yuri Gagarin’s historic journey into orbit in 1961. He ate pureed beef and liver placed in toothpaste-like tubes, a safe and practical solution for space conditions.
While in orbit for less than two hours, Gagarin also tried a tube of chocolate sauce for dessert. This experience confirmed that basic functions such as chewing and swallowing are possible even in microgravity, despite scientists’ earlier fears.
Over time, astronauts continued to explore space foods, evolving from frozen space ice cream to baking cookies on the International Space Station and even drinking espresso in specially designed space cups.
