Answering the question about the potential of such actions, von der Leyen said: not excluded Given the precedent in the US, where TikTok is facing a national ban. It will be reminded that the US president signed a law that forces TikTok’s owner, ByteDance, to sell the social network in America, otherwise it will be blocked.

TikTok is hanging by a thread

Von der Leyen emphasized the Commission’s proactive stance, saying the Commission was “the first institution in the world to ban TikTok on our corporate phones” given the platform’s risks.

Although von der Leyen did not join the debate as Commission president, her remarks as the leading candidate of the centre-right European People’s Party are in line with a broader trend of challenges facing TikTok in Europe.

  • Recent developments include TikTok’s decision to suspend the interactivity feature of its TikTok Lite app, following the Commission’s investigation under the content moderation rules of the Digital Services Act (DSA).
  • In addition, TikTok is subject to a separate investigation under the DSA for allegedly not adequately protecting minors. A commission authorized by the DSA may, as a last resort, resort to temporary blocking of a social network.

What they say on TikTok

For now, TikTok has not commented on reports of a possible ban in the EU. Previously, the social network had commented on the law signed by Biden, which forced ByteDance to sell the platform. They emphasized that TikTok will not be looking for someone to sell to in the US and will most likely close down.

TikTok’s daily share of unique users in the US is just 5% of ByteDance’s total number of apps. As for the EU, it is not yet clear how company representatives will react.

Why might TikTok be dangerous?

In the USA, they are trying to block the social network for transferring the data of American citizens to China. The information the platform collects includes age, preferences, location, email and other information about users. For this reason, in the USA, it is demanded that the American part of the platform be sold to local owners or blocked completely.

As for the EU, they are also interested in the issue of user security. The European Union is particularly concerned about the addictive algorithms of the social network, which it believes can cause addiction and dependency in underage users. This is also facilitated by the bonus program in the Lite version of the application, which is currently under separate review.
