There is always a few meters of distance around the house but I know this is not the most common situation. In fact, on more than one occasion I have found myself faced with the need to measure a piece of furniture in someone else’s home and just cannot find the opportunity. It wasn’t easy to find an app that did exactly what I wanted, but I found a very useful app that is almost perfect compared to two meters.

It is free but we must keep in mind that it has a certain ad load. If we want to say goodbye, we have the option to purchase the subscription for only 11 euros per year; This is a reasonable price for what it offers.

AR Ruler App: Tape Measure Cam is the app I chose for this purpose as some of the ones I’ve tried have been pretty disastrous. Most applications for measurement purposes encounter serious problems when performing calculations with furniture; This is something I haven’t encountered in this application.

This app has reached 10 million downloads and has a 4.3 star rating on Play Store. But let’s get to the main point; How does this application work and what can it do?

The first function is what most applications of this type promise: create room plan. This is the most complex function of the app and requires an extra installation: AR Plan 3D. It is an application that uses Google’s augmented reality to allow measurement of areas. To me this is secondary application, it doesn’t work well at all.

In my case, when there was a difference of ten centimeters, it calculated the distance to the ceiling as 2.70. This is an intolerable margin when we talk about flooring or job sizes.

Things change when measuring objects

The perfectly working star function is the one that gives meaning to the article: “take action.” It does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and there’s one thing I particularly like: It records the different measures we’re taking in real time so we don’t miss them.

First you’ll need to do a quick calculation on the surface, once you’ve done that it’s as simple as marking points A and B. In my experience, measurements were exactIn the worst case, by about half a centimeter.

However, there is a clear problem with such measurements: we have no reference. Let me explain: I know the meter on the app is accurate because I was able to compare the data with my two meters at home (we know that if we buy a quality meter there will be no measurement error no matter what). However, if we do not perform an accurate surface scan, these data may vary greatly.

In short, This app will not replace my metersbut it will remain installed for situations where it is necessary to use a meter when it is not nearby due to the vicissitudes of life.
