Developers can sign up for GitHub’s brand new Copilot Workspace. AI supports you in all phases of the development process, even before you have written the first line of code.
GitHub announced the Copilot Workspace at its user conference in November and is now opening the preview. Interested developers can join the waiting list via GitHub. GitHub describes the new platform as “an AI-native developer environment where you can freely brainstorm, plan, build, test and execute.”
With Copilot Workspace, GitHub continues to expand on the generative AI path it embarked on in 2022 with the launch of Copilot Assistant, now available in various flavors. Copilot Workspace integrates AI even deeper into the development process. While Copilot is primarily useful for accelerating projects that have already started, Copilot Workspace can support you before the first line of code has been written, says GitHub itself.
From idea to software
In a blog, GitHub explains how you can use Copilot Workspace. The AI assistant monitors your project from the start as soon as you open a GitHub repository. Copilot acts as a “second brain” that helps you think about how and where to start.
Do you have an idea? Then it’s time for implementation. Copilot Workspace proposes a roadmap to resolve the issue based on the codebase, answers, and additional information. It provides you with everything you need to validate the plan and test the code. You can make adjustments yourself if you have doubts about Copilot’s suggestions.
You can then immediately test, run, and refine the code until you’re happy with the end result. You can share both your code and your workspace with other developers via a pull request, so they can not only review your code, but also see how you worked with Copilot to achieve the result.
GitHub has not yet announced when Copilot Workspace will be available to the general public. It is said that they first want to get feedback from developers before rolling out the AI platform more broadly. Copilot Workspace will be available on both PC and mobile devices.
