The online version of OneDrive is undergoing a major redesign. With a new look and artificial intelligence, you can now view files offline.

You can view any file marked as available offline. The base environment in which your folder structure resides is accessible even without an internet connection. Renaming, sorting, moving or copying files is now also possible offline. Once the internet connection is restored, the changes will be synchronized.

According to Microsoft, offline mode also now responds up to three times faster. “Offline mode uses your device’s local storage to store certain file information such as file name, size, author, last access date, etc.,” explains Andrey Esipov, product manager at Microsoft. “This is made possible by the OneDrive Sync app, which intelligently stores a cache of your files’ metadata locally.”

Mac users can use the new offline features in addition to the existing Files On-Demand tool in OneDrive via File Explorer on Mac. There you can choose which files should always be available offline.

OneDrive’s new offline features are only available to paying customers. Anyone with a Microsoft 365 Business or Education subscription can get started today. All you need is the latest version of the OneDrive sync app on Windows or macOS. Then browse to OneDrive in Chrome or Edge. There you can familiarize yourself with the new function and configure everything in just a few steps.
