A consortium of Japanese companies has created the world’s first high-speed 6G wireless device that can transmit data 20 times faster than 5G’s fastest theoretical capacity. Test results show that the consortium’s wireless device transfers data at 100 gigabits per second in the 100 gigahertz range indoors and in the 300 gigahertz range outdoors (below infrared in the electromagnetic spectrum). The tests were carried out at an altitude of 100 meters.

5G, launched in 2019, is the most advanced wireless communications standard and is used, for example, in almost all new smartphones. The average speed of 5G in the US is approximately 204.9 megabits per second, while the theoretical maximum speed of 5G is at least 10 gigabits.

But scientists are not trying to accelerate the existing technology, but are already trying to create the sixth generation of this standard with a developed infrastructure. Should be implemented by the early 2030sAccording to the Association “Global System for Mobile Communications”.

What is the diffrence?

The main differences between 5G and 6G are the frequency ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum in which they operate. Operating at higher ranges generally means much higher speeds.

  • 5G signals are typically transmitted in bands up to 6 GHz and extend into a band around 40 GHz known as the “millimeter wave band.”
  • According to Nokia, 6G is expected to use higher frequency bands between 100 GHz and 300 GHz, known as “subTHHz”. Transmission in this range benefits from higher speeds but has the disadvantage of greater environmental interference, making signals more likely to be blocked, especially indoors.

If the transition from 4G to 5G paved the way for significantly higher volumes of media consumption, the transition from 5G to 6G could pave the way for new technologies such as holographic communications, smoother virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality experiences.

However, since 6G relies on much higher frequency bands, We will need a completely new infrastructure for transmitting and amplifying signalsand smartphones or virtual reality devices will require a 6G antenna.

In previous tests, scientists achieved even faster 6G speeds over much shorter distances. For example, another team of scientists from Japan demonstrated world records for 6G speeds of up to 240 Gbps at a distance of just 20 meters and published their findings Feb. 10 in the journal IEICE Electronics Express.
