You can continue to use itsme to log in to digital government services for the next three years. The federal government has reached an agreement with itsme to expand cooperation.

Belgian Mobile ID, the company behind the itsme login app, confirms to Belga that it is expanding its collaboration with the government. What this means for citizens is that they can continue to use itsme to log in to government digital services for the next three years. For example, with itsme you can fill out and forward your tax letter without needing an ID card reader.

Itsme has been around for more than six years and is gradually playing an indispensable role in the Belgian digital ecosystem. The authentication platform was invented in the banking and telecommunications sectors, but over the years it has expanded to several sectors, including the public sector. More than seven million Belgians have now registered on the platform and itsme processes more than one million verifications per day, it was recently announced.

Competition is lurking to break itsme’s monopoly. The Smart ID application comes from Estonia and is used by the European Commission, among others. MyID.be is a Belgian alternative, but this platform does not enjoy the same government support as itsme.
