WhatsApp is significantly expanding its horizons. What once started as a simple messaging app for one-on-one conversations has gradually developed into a full-fledged communication platform. With new functions for communities and group conversations, WhatsApp is now also becoming an event planner.

In communities, organizations can bring up to a thousand people together in a group conversation. WhatsApp now makes it easier to plan events with everyone in the group, from a virtual meeting to the next big company party. Anyone can create an event for others to respond to, so the entire group knows who is coming.

Guests can also find the event on the group’s information page and those who attend will be notified as the event approaches. The event will have a separate chat, so people who can’t/don’t want to attend won’t have to receive all notifications about the conversation.

Important announcement

WhatsApp is also adding comments to so-called announcement groups, allowing members to leave feedback and replies to announcements from administrators. It also minimizes replies and mutes chat so people can read and participate in the discussion without flooding others with notifications.

WhatsApp will initially roll out these new features to all community conversations. This will happen in the next few months. Then it’s time for the normal group discussions.
