Commissioner General UN Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini said this Sunday that Israel continues to prevent the organization from accessing the Gaza Strip to carry out humanitarian work.

“Israeli authorities continue to deny humanitarian access to United Nations. This week, for the second time, they did not approve my entry into Gaza, where I planned to stay with our security forces. UNRWAincluding in the foreground,” he wrote on his account on the social network X.

In addition, Lazzarini assured that in recent weeks they have registered an increase in the number blocking access to humanitarian aid into the Palestinian enclave, as well as attacks on aid workers and convoys.

“In the last two weeks alone, we have recorded ten incidents: shelling of convoys, arrests of UN staff with intimidation, stripping and threats with weapons, and long delays at checkpoints forcing convoys to move in the dark or be cancelled,” he added.

In addition, he reported that various Palestinian militias they fired rockets against the Kerem Shalom crossing, one of the main routes for humanitarian aid into the enclave, after which it had to be closed.

In this sense, he warned that such incidents were repeatedly provoked by both sides, which kept them in a “race against time” against famine in Gazaand that the activities of UNRWA and other humanitarian agencies have suffered since the start of the war.

He then called for an independent investigation into what happened. attacks on aid workers and its logistics and infrastructure teams, and recalled that the blockade of humanitarian aid is a violation of international humanitarian law.

“I call on the Israeli authorities to assist humanitarian access throughout the Gaza Strip, including the northern part. “I also call on Hamas and other armed groups to stop attacking humanitarian checkpoints, refrain from diverting aid and ensure that it reaches all those in need,” he added.
