Google Maps for Android is gearing up for the full rollout of a redesigned interface that includes some significant improvements based on user feedback. The updated design offers smoother navigation by placing the map in the foreground. Many of the old full-screen control panels have been replaced by smaller, translucent windows.
This provides important context by allowing users to see part of the map in the background while viewing details. The corners of these information windows now have a more rounded appearance, and closing or sharing information is simplified with easy-to-reach buttons.
Another notable change is the way routes are handled. Departure and arrival areas now float elegantly at the top of the map, and transportation mode options have been moved to the bottom of the screen. This means a more map-centric experience.
Google hasn’t officially announced the launch, but the extended design testing period suggests a wider rollout is imminent. Since the update is pushed server-side, updating the application itself will not initialize the new view. Considering the months spent on testing, it is likely that soon everyone will start navigating using the updated Google Maps. We can expect a similar visual update for Google Maps on iOS in the future.
