Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo announced in the State of the Union address that he will present to Congress a legal reform that would allow the dismissal of Attorney General Consuelo Porras, whom he accused of orchestrating a “coup d’etat.” to prevent may take office as president in January.
He said there remains a minority in the country that opposes the changes that are ingrained in the institutions and advocated by Consuelo Porras.
Arevalo directly accused the prosecutor of persecuting and imprisoning people who reported cases of corruption.
He said the prosecutor’s office does not deal with cases of organized crime and political corruption.
Guatemala’s president pointed to cases of procurement of Covid-19 vaccines and former officials who admitted corrupt practices.
He accused the prosecutor of judging the election without any elements, which he called an “attack on democracy.”
Explains the reform
In an address to the nation, he declared that “the dark cycle of comforting batons must end now.”
Bernardo Arevalo said he could not allow the situation to remain the same since he was elected by the citizens to fight corruption.
He explained that for this reason he would take the initiative to bring the prosecutor to justice and launch a mechanism for her removal.
