On May 3, 2024, China sent the Chang’e-6 automatic interplanetary station to the moon, which will carry soil from the far side of its natural satellite to Earth for the first time in human history. Recently, it was revealed that there is an additional payload on the probe that was not previously reported.
Following the launch, the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) released an image of the rover attached to the lander. Little is known about the lunar cycle. Presumably the small rover is equipped with an infrared spectrometer that will help determine the composition of rocks and regolith on the lunar surface.
It is not yet clear how the lunar rover, attached to the side of the lander, will land on our planet’s moon. Most likely, the rover will communicate with the lander via Wi-Fi. Given the miniature size of the device and the short lifespan of the lander, it is likely that the rover was designed for a limited operating period.
