China launched the Shenzhou-14 manned spacecraft on Sunday and sent three astronauts to the space station for a six-month mission.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to Xinhua.

It was noted that the three astronauts will work with a ground services team to complete the assembly and construction of the Tiangun space station, transforming it from a single-module complex into a three-module space laboratory – the main module “Tianhe” and two laboratory modules “Wentian” and “Mentyan” .

The China Manned Space Program Office (CMSA) said the spacecraft was launched using a Changzhen-2F launch vehicle from the Jiuquan Cosmodrome in northwest China.

CMSA Deputy Director Lin Xixiang said at a press conference on Saturday that the Shenzhou-14 team will complete the task of bringing the lab modules closer together, placing and docking in the station’s main module, in coordination with ground services.

The main Tianhe module was launched into space in April 2021, and the Wentian and Mentyan lab modules are scheduled to launch into orbit in July and October, respectively, this year.

While in orbit, the Shenzhou-14 crew will witness the Tianzhou-5 cargo ship and the Shenzhou-15 manned spacecraft dock with the Tianhe main module.

Also in orbit will be the return of three astronauts with the crew of “Shenzhou-15”. The two teams will work together at the station for a while. The Shenzhou-14 crew is scheduled to return to Earth in December this year.
