US supports permanent representation of Latin America on the UN Security Council

US Ambassador before the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfieldinsisted this Wednesday at the Council of the Americas that Latin America And Caribbean have a permanent establishment in UN Security Council “strengthen alliances” and “be prepared to face current challenges together.”

This is what he said at 54 Washington Annual Conference on America, held at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the American capital. It is the region’s premier event in the United States, bringing together high-ranking officials each year to discuss topics such as trade, democracy or energy.

“Our administration has made clear that reform of the UN Security Council must have permanent representation from the Americas,” because “they have always been serious and constructive partners,” he reiterated.

Currently, this organization with the mission of maintaining peace and security throughout the world has five permanent members: USA, China, Russia, France And Great Britain.

The Ambassador also spoke about economic prosperitywhich believes that it cannot be understood without the development of democracy, and links fundamental rights with the progress of society.

“When countries emphasize political rights, when they root out corruption and strengthen the rule of law, international investors gain confidence and businesses can flourish,” he said.

In this sense, he supported “there is reason for optimism” and highlighted some of the “successes” made in recent decades, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean, due to which, he noted, the percentage of Latinos living in poverty has been reduced “dramatically” and is below pandemic levels.

“On behalf of President (Joe) Biden, I want to make clear that the United States is fully committed to the success of the Western Hemisphere because when countries in the region succeed, economic and national security are stronger,” he concluded.

The person in charge of Latin America at the State Department, Brian Nicholsadded at this meeting that the region “more private sector presence is required” to achieve positive changes for the population by creating, for example, well-paid jobs. Therefore, he extended his hand to support the guests in moving forward with their commitments.

Likewise, the Special Advisor to the President for the Americas, Christopher Dodd, supported the need to expand cooperation with the business sector: “You cannot be for job creation and against the private sector. “It doesn’t make any sense,” he said.
