UNRWA says 200 Palestinians flee Rafah every hour

UN Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) warned that on average About 200 Palestinians flee the city of Rafah every hourespecially now that Israeli forces have occupied the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing in the southern Gaza Strip, which connects the Palestinian enclave with Egypt and serves as one of the main entry points for humanitarian aid in the area.

Agency Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement between the parties on a ceasefire in the area and warned about “concern” caused by the latest advances of the Israeli army in the area.which force the population to continue to move due to increased violence.

However, he clarified that most Palestinians leaving the area are heading towards Khan Yunis city – in the past heavily damaged by Israeli forces as part of their offensive – and other areas of the central Gaza Strip. However, since UNRWA has not been able to confirm the total number of displaced persons at this time.

Lazzarini announced this in a message published on his account on the social network X.

The absence of a ceasefire means more loss, pain and mourning and takes people far from the peace they so desperately need.

For its part, the agency expressed regret that “they are not receiving any help” and appreciated that nearly 1.5 million displaced Palestinians currently live in Rafah. “There has been continuous shelling in the area over the past day,” UNRWA said, describing the situation as “catastrophic.”

“No one is safe in the Gaza Strip” UNRWA stressed before noting that its facilities have been hit 368 times since the start of the war.

Civilian lives must be protected at all times. Humanitarian workers are not a target.

The Israeli army, for its part, urged residents in the eastern part of the city to leave the area as fears grow of a full-fledged ground military operation. Israeli forces reported that they were able to destroy tunnels and military installations belonging to Hamas.
