Western Digital introduces the 8TB SanDisk Desk Drive

Western Digital has expanded its storage catalog with the 8 TB SanDisk Desk Drive, the highest capacity ever produced from external solid-state solutions.

You already know the advantages of SSDs as internal drives for personal computers. However, these advantages have also been transferred to external solutions. While there isn’t as much supply or innovation as the in-house ones, the industry offers some very interesting units, both those that can be carried anywhere in your pocket and those that are used to increase the capacity of machines such as video game consoles or as desktop solutions.

The 8TB SanDisk Desk Drive is a External SSD for desktop computers with high performance and capacity. WD is targeting content creators and professionals who need a drive that can easily and reliably back up their photos, videos and high-resolution files in one place. As you will see in the pictures, its aesthetics will not look like any computer desk.

The motivation behind the launch of this ultra-high-capacity drive (WD’s largest external SSD) is explained by the increase generating massive amounts of content that need drives capable of handling them, as Susan Park, VP of Consumer Solutions at Western Digital explains: “As digital content creation continues to grow, there is an increasing need for high-performance, high-capacity storage solutions to help manage and store it. Expanding our SSD portfolio is the first step in providing creators with backup solutions that provide the speed and flexibility they need to unleash their creativity.”

The CEO promises more, and by 2025 the idea is to double the capacity again to a stratospheric 16 Tbytes. If the capacity is excellent, its performance is no less, because with the internal USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface you can achieve data transfer speeds 1000 MB per second sequential read and 900 MB per second write.

Its external interface is USB Type-C and the company includes various cables with the unit to connect to types C and A. It is officially compatible with Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 14 or later. It should also have no problems working on Linux computers.

The SanDisk Desk Drive 8 TB is now available on the manufacturer’s website for 786 euros, with a 3-year warranty. If you don’t need that much capacity, WD also sells a version with the same features with a capacity of 4 TB on 430 euros.
