As Mark Gurman reports BloombergApple plans to support some of iOS 18’s upcoming features with data centers using servers powered by Apple’s silicon chips.
Chips M2 Ultra will solve some of the most advanced AI challenges planned for this year and beyond. Apple has reportedly accelerated its server plans in response to the popularity of ChatGPT and other AI products, and future servers may use next-generation M4 chips.
Although some tasks will be done on the device, more intensive tasks such as creating images and summarizing articles will require a cloud connection. A more powerful version of Siri also requires cloud servers. Privacy has long been a concern for Apple, but the team behind the servers says Apple chips will protect user privacy.
Gurman had previously claimed that all upcoming iOS 18 features would run on the device, but it looks like some features coming this year will actually use cloud servers. Apple plans to use its own servers for now, but may also rely on servers from other companies in the future.
