Father and son Luke and Mike Bell (Mike and Luke Bell) from South Africa created the world’s fastest FPV drone, which entered the Guinness Book of Records. A small drone designed from scratch and equipped with a camera reached a speed of 480.23 km/h, beating both the previous record holder (a homemade drone) and the drone the Red Bull team created specifically for Formula 1 filming.
The main problem when creating a high-speed drone was the frequent firing of cables and nodes of the power subsystem. The currents powering electric motors turned out to be so large that enthusiasts could not immediately find a reliable solution. It took months of work and revisions before the drone began to demonstrate the wonders of high-speed flight.
As befitting a feat in the Guinness Book of World Records, the drone had to fly 100 segments in both directions to break the record. The Peregrine 2 drone performed this flight at an average speed of 480.23 km/h (298.74 mph). Obviously, this is not the last record in this area, but each subsequent increase in speed will be increasingly difficult.
The previous record was also set by Ryan Lademann (Ryan Lademann), an enthusiast from the USA. During the test section he created, he flew at an average speed of 360.5 km/h, but at the peak the speed increased to 414 km/h. The drone created by the Red Bull team to film Formula 1 races can reach a speed of 350 km/h. In its defense, it carries a more powerful camera than enthusiast DIYers.
