Manzana When it comes to artificial intelligence, you need to get your act together, those from Cupertino need to show something solid as soon as possible, when they are already way behind Google, Microsoft, Meta, etc. And yes, I am only talking about large tech companies with a broad scope, not the ones dedicated exclusively to AI, because logically they generally have to continue because it is their field and therefore they have to stand. out.

Apple’s relationship with artificial intelligence is somewhat erratic. We must remember that the company introduced and launched Siri, its AI-based personal assistant, in 2011, ahead of the rest of the market. And it is also true that those from Cupertino were the first to integrate the NPU into the SoC, namely the A11, which was chosen to power the iPhone 8 generation And this component is also present since the first generation of Apple Silicon. with a 16-core Neural Engine NPU. In comparison, as we recently recalled, it wasn’t until the middle of last year that we saw the same movement in the x86-64 ecosystem. In other words, Apple has been a pioneer in introducing specialized elements for AI into smartphones, tablets and computers.

However, The same cannot be said about its practical use.. Siri has been in need of a major update for years, and the rest of the mobile phone manufacturers (led by Google and Samsung) have already equipped their latest devices with a huge set of features, very diverse and extremely practical. to artificially use intelligence very efficiently and thus use the NPUs that make up the SoCs on which their smartphones are based.

All indications are that Apple will try to regain positions at WWDC 2024, something they have been working on very actively for several months now.. In fact, we learned in July last year that they were working on their own LLM, and in recent months, too documents of some projects coming out of their laboratories. However, it seems that they have decided not to put all their eggs in one basket (which is quite reasonable) and as we told you a few weeks ago, they are in talks with OpenAI to use their technological development in the next generation of iOS.

As Mark Gurman advanced in the tweet you can see above and then elaborated on in Bloomberg, Apple and OpenAI are now poised to sign a deal that will bring the latter’s AI to the former’s software and devices. Only a few details (common with this type of contract) would remain pending, but essentially the deal is already polished and ready to be signed by both companies.

Since neither company has publicly commented on the deal, the specific terms of the deal are currently unknown. OpenAI will hold an event tomorrow, but all indications are that it will be focused on the presentation of the company’s search engineand that Apple will reserve information about this deal and what it will entail for a developer meeting in June.
