He illegal wildlife trade not only threatens biodiversity, but also affects the productivity of forests and soils store C02, which contributes to climate change.

This is one of the aspects highlighted in the report on global wildlife crime released this Monday by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

According to this report, there is a relationship between illegal wildlife trade, species decline, ecosystem change and loss of biodiversity, and this has an impact on climate change.

This situation occurs both when trees are illegally cut down and when the population of animal species is lost, which affects the entire ecosystem.
For example, overexploitation of large species such as African forest elephants could reduce carbon stocks in central African rain forests by 6–9%.

This impact is also reflected in grassland habitats, where white rhinos have been shown to have a positive effect on soil carbon levels, unlike livestock.

In addition to the climate impact, illegal trade calls for implementation invasive species which can have devastating consequences for local ecosystems.
Despite regulations such as those of the European Union, illegal trade remains an important channel for its expansion, with 27% of species seized globally between 2015 and 2022 classified as invasive.

Finally, the report notes that wildlife crime is not only reduce the income of local communities it also depends on nature makes them more vulnerable to illegal practices such as human trafficking, a modern form of slavery.
