Google published in mid-March the date when Google I/O 2024 will be held, this year’s edition of its developer event, which has been drawing interest from the general public for several years now, as it’s the space the tech company has chosen for some notable announcements. We had a perfect example of this last year, which was probably one of the most complete I/Os in years.
This year after last week’s announcements We have learned that the devices will not have a place in this year’s edition. And this, together with the publication of the agenda a few weeks ago, gave us a fairly focused approach to what Google has reserved for the inauguration of Google I/O 2024. Which is not to say that, as we already indicated at the time, it was a huge reserve for the development of these spaces, and therefore for many surprises.
Our bet depended, as you know, on three main axes: Android 15, Google Gemini and artificial intelligence. And from the very beginning of the event it was clear that we were not wrong at least in the last two points. Of course, unlike in 2023, where Gemini shared the spotlight with other models used in other functions, this year technology created a all-in with your LLMwhich has played in almost everything related to AI-based development.
And not only on the services side, the (very brief) Android portion of the event focused exclusively on the OS’s capabilities in relation to artificial intelligence… thanks Gemini. ANDWe expected, because it was evident, that Google would focus this Google I/o 2024 keynote on its progress in artificial intelligence.even more so when we consider yesterday’s OpenAI event, Microsoft’s May 20th event, starting the day after Microsoft Build 2024 and Apple’s WWDC 2024 in June.
But it’s true that due to the absolute focus on Gemini and its integration into products and services, I personally missed a bit that other areas were being addressed, and at the moment I’m mainly thinking about Android 15. It’s true, Yes, it will have a place in many planned activities, but I’d like to see something a little more diverse in that regard. But hey, that’s more a statement of personal preference than an action rating. An event that, without reaching last year’s level, Yes, it also has some interesting announcements.which we review below:
Without discounting the rest of what was announced, without a doubt the most interesting thing they showed us was the Astra project, a projection of the future, but done with existing technology which shows us Google’s vision of universal (universal) agents with native multimodal support. Of course, there’s still no concrete estimate of when we’ll be able to start enjoying a user experience like the one in the video, but knowing that this is a real demo is undoubtedly exciting.
You don’t need to be a guru to realize this huge relationship between Project Astra and what OpenAI showed us yesterday With the GPT-4o, the future of assistants clearly includes voice communication, adding both input and output of text and images, bringing us closer, albeit with no small limitations, to the future Spike described to Jonze in Ona, something I he was thinking this afternoon.
