A driver has been arrested in Florida for crashing into a bus carrying migrants, killing 8 people.

Authorities The driver of a truck that collided with a bus of agricultural workers was detainedwhich left at least eight dead and another eight seriously injured.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said the subject is facing eight charges. manslaughter and driving under the influence.

Brian McLean Howard was driving a Ford truck when it crashed sideways into the bus it was carrying. Fifty-three farm workers traveled, some of them Mexican.

About 53 workers were riding a bus along a major highway in northern Florida’s Marion County, heading to Cannon Farms, which specializes in growing watermelons.

The crash happened just before 6:40 a.m. local time (1040 GMT) near Ocala, north of Tampa, when the bus collided sideways with Howard’s truck, which was traveling in the oncoming lane, according to FHP.

The impact caused the bus to leave the road, go through a guardrail and overturn on its side, police said.

The FHP confirmed the death of eight people and noted that about 40 more were taken to medical centers.

It was initially reported that the driver of the van was taken to hospital in serious condition.

Authorities said most of the farm workers on the bus were migrants.
