Will the monkeypox epidemic return to Africa?

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned this Thursday about a deadlier version of monkeypox in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), although not a single case of the disease has been identified outside the African continent.

According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The disease is a zoonosis caused by monkeypox virus. which belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus, which includes the variola virus (which causes smallpox).

Monkeypox, first discovered in Africa in 1970, is characterized by rashes or skin lesions that are usually concentrated on the face, palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

In 2022, the disease infected thousands of people around the world, especially gay and bisexual men, and the CDC said that a “deadlier version of monkeypox is now ravaging the DRC.”

Person-to-person transmission of the virus can occur through direct contact with infected skin or body fluids, including sexual contact, and the agency urged people at risk for such transmission to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

The vaccine, marketed as Jynneos, consists of two doses given approximately one month apart.

The spread of the deadly Clade I virus strain is raising concerns that the virus could spread to other countries, prompting the CDC to stress the importance of urgent global action to help the African country fight to contain the virus.

The agency noted that during 2023 and so far in 2024, approximately 19,900 cases of clade I infection have been reported in 25 of the DRC’s 26 provinces, resulting in at least 975 deaths.
