The floating dock already allows small vessels to quickly unload humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip that will be delivered to U.N. agencies and other humanitarian groups, Vice Adm. Brad Cooper said. for distribution to the population of Gaza.

The infrastructure includes a floating platform a few kilometers offshore for large vessels from Cyprus to transfer the trays to other smaller vessels.

The infrastructure will help speed up the delivery of aid, especially given the closure of the southern Rafah crossing, a vital land crossing for food imports that has been blocked by the Israeli offensive in the Egyptian border city.

“I think we will transport about 500 tons in a couple of days. According to our estimates, from 500 to 600 tons.“Cooper explained at a press conference, where he also added that they have several thousand more tons waiting to pass through this infrastructure to the people of Gaza, who are at serious risk of starvation.

The Vice Admiral emphasized that this mission is purely humanitarian in nature and is carried out on the basis of the principles of neutrality and impartiality.

“The sole purpose of the pier is to deliver humanitarian aid to the people of the Gaza Strip,” Cooper stressed, adding that “the sea route is an additional effort and is not intended to replace the land routes into Gaza.”

Despite recent challenges, including border closures and adverse weather conditions, US authorities have assured that their commitment and that of their partners (Cyprus and Israel) is to secure the corridor and improve the security situation.
