Cloudflare has acquired Baselime. Baselime, which specializes in cloud-based observability technology, will now become part of Cloudflare’s developer platform.

Cloudflare completed its acquisition of Baselime in early April, entering the observability market and expanding its offerings to serverless application developers.

The integration of Baselime technology into the Cloudflare platform promises to provide developers with tools to monitor performance, detect errors, and optimize the cost of their apps.

With the acquisition, Cloudflare customers will gain access to advanced observability capabilities such as analysis of data from thousands of fields, OpenTelemetry-based tools for integration with various application frameworks, and insights from observability data through real-time tracking of errors, alerts, and trace charts and an AI debug assistant.

All of these tools are designed to make it easier for developers to quickly identify and fix problems, whether they affect individual users or the entire application.

To understand how Cloudflare plans to integrate Baselime, we just asked questions to Rita Kozlov, VP Product for the Cloudflare Developer Platform.

How will Cloudflare’s core strategy evolve as a result of this acquisition?

As our developer platform grows and gains popularity, we strive to improve the developer experience across the board. Observability is a long-standing goal of ours and is critical to a best-in-class developer experience.

Why is Cloudflare suddenly putting a lot of emphasis on observability with its acquisition of Baselime? Is it a sudden change?

Cloudflare has been busy over the last few years unlocking the next frontier of cloud computing: the Connectivity cloud. The team creates primitives that enable developers to build applications using an entirely new set of paradigms, from workers to D1, R2, queues, KV, long-lived objects, AI, and all other services available on the Cloudflare Developers Platform.

Adding observability features that allow a developer to understand the behavior of their cloud applications is a natural next step in the evolution of our developer platform.

By adding Baselime’s capabilities, any developer can build, deploy, and learn from their serverless applications so they can fix problems before they become problems.

How do you plan to integrate Baselime’s technology into current Cloudflare tools?

Our goal is to continue Baselime’s mission of bringing next-generation telemetry to developers building serverless applications. We plan to integrate Baselime’s observability technology to become an integral part of the Workers developer platform, enabling developers to access monitoring, logging, and debugging tools as a first-party experience.

Will Baselime remain on board as an independent brand? Or will it all be Cloudflare?

Baselime will be fully integrated into the Cloudflare developer platform.

Is the Baselime acquisition a piece of the puzzle in a larger strategy for further acquisitions in the future? Are there ambitions in this area? Or was Baselime a great opportunity that came your way?

Cloudflare has selectively added great teams and technologies over the past few years. These include Vectrix, which added CASB capabilities to our Zero Trust platform, Area 1 Security, which added email security capabilities to our security suite, and Nefeli, which added multi-cloud networking capabilities to our Network Services suite .

We are very selective about mergers and acquisitions because we want to ensure that any technology we add is part of our unified platform and works seamlessly with the rest of our product suite. We will selectively consider additional options if we believe the team makes cultural sense and the technology can be fully integrated into our cloud network.
