A bright fragment of a comet lit up the skies over Spain and Portugal late Saturday, according to the European Space Agency (ESA). It’s a dazzling spectacle that one Lisbon resident described as “like a movie.”
The incident was accidentally captured by teenagers recording their content for social networks:
On Sunday morning, ESA shared information about Portugal.
But he later said it turned out to be “a small piece of a comet” rather than a meteor, estimating that it flew over Spain and Portugal at 45 kilometers per second before burning up over the Atlantic.
“The likelihood of any meteorite being discovered is very low,” ESA said.
In both countries, videos taken in several cities and towns have gone viral on social media, showing the object crossing the night sky at high speed and lighting it up in bright blues and greens.
Spain’s Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory also said preliminary analysis by the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia showed the object was of “comet origin.”
During a concert in the Portuguese city of Barcelos, an object was recorded flying across the sky during the singer’s performance. Another video showed the sky over Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, lighting up for a few seconds.
Many contacted emergency services to report the incident. A spokesman for Spain’s 112 emergency service in Madrid told news agency Europa Press it had received several calls.
Bernardo Taborda, 31, who lives in Lisbon, told Reuters he was walking around the city with friends when the sky suddenly turned bright green: “It was almost like daylight (…) we all looked around and saw it.”
“It was like a movie, we all looked at each other and were stunned,” Taborda said. “That was incredible”.
