Intel wants to dethrone AMD in portable consoles with Core Ultra Series 2

A portable console called GP10 with a Core Ultra Series 2 processor appeared in the list of product presentations for Computex 2024. Does Intel want to catch up in a segment dominated by AMD?

The chip giant announced a few months ago that its next processing platform, the Core Ultra Series 2, would be available later this year. Second generation Core Ultra codenamed ‘Lunar Lake’ They promise improved energy efficiency and integrated graphicskey sections for the very vibrant portable console segment.

Intel continues to lead in PC client processor market share, but in handheld gaming machines AMD wins overwhelmingly with the Ryzen Z1 series. Machines like the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go offer better performance and battery life than the MSI Claw, the only machine from a major manufacturer to use Intel’s Core Ultra. Plus, it’s more expensive than machines using AMD and its overall experience. Intel has a long way to go in this type of product and seems willing to at least try to bring alternatives to market.

The GP10 will debut the Core Ultra Series 2

The machine in question comes from China’s Weibu Group, an OEM/ODM specialist, meaning it manufactures products on contract for third-party clients. Confirming what we said above, Intel’s interest in occupying this space.

Its engine is the big news of this model and the reason for its inclusion here, the Core Ultra Series 2 processor, the model of which was not listed. It would be accompanied by up to 64 GB of LPDDR5 memory (integrated) and an M.2 SSD. NVMe 2280 up to 2 TB capacity. There will be no shortage of raw power on paperalthough we have to wait for improvements in graphics and battery life.

I’d be pretty big with one 10.95 inch touch screena native resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz It will support Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, have a 3.5mm jack and at least one USB Type-C port for power and data charging.

The design can be seen in the cover image and it looks like an Xbox controller with a tablet attached in the middle. Quite a bit of room for improvement, although we insist the Core Ultra Series 2 premiere is important, and Intel’s continued insistence on shrinking the AMD space, giving the consumer more options to choose from.
