Microsoft sand plays everything at the discretion of the AI. Yesterday we attended one of the most interesting presentations in recent memory, where the folks at Redmond finally revealed a plan that was as ambitious as it was disruptive and divisive the future of Windows towards ARM obviously.

Memories (Recall in English) is the star feature of Copilot +PC (what we knew until recently as IA PC) and is based on the NPU (Neural processing unitwhich we can translate Neural processing unit) contained in the Snapdragon X introduced a few hours ago or in the brand new Intel Lunar Lake. It promises to track everything we see and do on our computer, in exchange for being able to search and retrieve anything in seconds.

Situations such as deleting a file by mistake, discarding the wrong draft, or wasting time in your browser history trying to recover a lost card are certainly very familiar to you. With Memories, this scenario is a thing of the past and we can go back to any moment, from moving a file, editing a document, or revisiting a meeting we had hours ago.

Memories works in the background transparent to the user and is able to record any activity in applications, monitor communications and meetings, remember browser activity, PDF files consulted and much more. Thanks to AI, we won’t have to waste time navigating to the past, but questions like “view invoice document 2024” or “photos from vacation in Italy” will return the exact answer in seconds.

Possible This technology sounds familiarfor both Windows and Mac OS users. Microsoft already tried this years ago with Timelinea much less ambitious vision that ended up being abandoned in 2021, and there’s a third-party Rewind app for Apple devices.

In addition to Copilot +PC support, you will need Memories to use 256 GB of space available with 50 GB free As a minimum. By default, this feature will be allocated 25 GB, which Microsoft says is enough to store up to 3 months of activity. Older images will be automatically deleted as space is needed.

Regarding privacy, Microsoft emphasizes that Memories works local and privateand that they will not use the information obtained for anything else. The user will have the option to pause, stop or delete any captured content and apps or websites may be excluded (Memories will not collect information from private Edge windows or DRM protected content).

In the official documentation, Microsoft also specifies that the information is always stored on local storage and protected by encryption BitLocker. The images are linked to each profile, are not shared with other users, nor will they be used for personalized advertising or AI training features.

At this point we are confronted the first of many decisions future. How far will we let AI into our lives? Where is the delicate balance between privacy, security and functionality? Microsoft has taken the first step and users have a choice, at least for now, but it’s clear that AI is here to stay and nothing will be the same.
