Chinese company BYD will launch its cheapest electric car in Europe next year. The BYD Seagull electric car, priced at $9,700 in China, has already caused concerns among foreign competitors on the eve of its official launch.

Since the project was led by former Lamborghini designer Wolfgang Egger, the budget electric car was called mini Lamborghini. The Seagull is equipped with a 10.1-inch rotating central display and DiLink support.

Terry Wojchowsky, a former GM executive and president of Caresoft Global’s automotive division, called BYD’s low-cost Seagull “a clarion call to the rest of the industry” earlier this year.

Caresoft, an engineering consulting firm, examines each component of a vehicle to determine how it can be improved for its customers. After testing Seagull, the company said it was simple and effective. More importantly, Caresoft was surprised by the quality and reliability of the electric vehicle.

“What they do is done very well,” Wojchowski said. “The machine is built very efficiently.” BYD introduced the Seagull to overseas markets, including Brazil.

Ford CEO Jim Farley called it a “pretty good” car. Meanwhile, Martin Sander, head of Ford’s European electric vehicle division, said: “Of course, we get nervous when new competition enters the market.”

BYD’s low-cost electric car, sold as the Dolphin Mini, costs about $20,000 in Brazil, which is less than most rivals. BYD expects the Seagull to be priced under 20,000 euros in Europe.
