Belnet completes the first phase of WAN migration for federal services. The FPS Economy, WASO, Social Security, Mobility and Public Health were the first to be transferred to a new, centralized WAN network. Migration has been completely completed for the economy and is making good progress in the other cabinets. Approximately twenty government services will eventually move to the network as part of a phased migration.

Significant savings should be possible by centralizing the management of WAN services from various federal agencies. Belnet, the national research and education network that provides specific IT services and connectivity to federal and local governments, has been selected to lead the project in 2022. In March 2023, Telenet Business was appointed partner of a framework agreement worth 73 million euros.

1.2 million per year

Belnet director Dirk Haex predicts that after the migration of all government services involved, savings of up to 1.2 million euros per year will be possible. But that is not the only advantage of centralizing WAN connectivity. The authorities will also be relieved of administrative burdens, as Belnet will act as the manager and central contact for the network.

Thomas Dermine (PS), State Secretary for Science Policy, is satisfied with the progress of the project. “Centralizing the management of these WAN networks is a success story. The savings to the federal government are significant and will increase as the project progresses.”

Completed in 2026

For Belnet and Telenet, the work is far from complete. At this point, only about ten percent of the project has been completed. Belnet hopes to be fully finished with the transfer of Social Security, Mobility, Public Health and the FASFC by the summer. Then it’s the turn of finance and justice, among other things.

If everything goes according to plan, the project will be completed in 2026. Some extensions are still possible until 2028, Haex adds.
