iFixit ends partnership with Samsung, bad news for Right to Repair

About two years ago, iFixit and Samsung have reached an agreement through which users of Korean technology devices could obtain, making it one of the reference sites for the right to repair, original parts and precise instructions on how to carry out repairs. In the past, we have already repeated other collaborations of this type, for example the one recently signed with Kobo or last year’s collaboration with Microsoft and Logitech.

This type of cooperation is always very good news, as it is a great help to all users who are aware of the right to rectification, but In the case of Samsung, it was an extraordinary interest because, as you can see in our publications on this topic, IFixit has never been particularly positive about the assembly of Samsung devices for the purpose of their repair by their users, that is, without having to resort to a technical service.

However, it seems that the Korean company is not bound by the right to repair after all, so iFixit released a scathing statement about ending its partnership with Samsung. In said statement, which you can read here, they question the technology company’s commitment to said collaboration to the extent that, according to them, many of its users, despite wanting a repair, were dissuaded and opted to buy new devices instead.

The main point that iFixit emphasizes is the cost of replacement parts, so high that they claim it was a major deterrent. Furthermore, and due to Samsung’s pricing and distribution policy, iFixit would be forced to sell components in bundles such as the one consisting of the screen and battery, which makes no sense for a user who only wants to replace. one of them both components, another more than important load.

In their statement, iFixit acknowledges that they received several warnings from third parties when they announced the partnership with Samsung, and even suggests that they may have been over-optimistic, but they also confirm that they do not give up their intentions to provide support to users of branded devices who wish to exercise their right to repair. So from June they will no longer be an official parts distributor, but components will continue, either OEM if possible and always stating whether they are genuine or non-genuine.

Another activity that they will no longer carry out with their own resources is the preparation of repair guides.although at this point they are encouraging their community, which has always been very active in this regard, to continue generating content for Samsung users, regardless of whether they purchase replacement parts from iFixit or through other channels.
