TikTok is testing 60-minute video uploads

TikTok says it is also testing 60-minute video uploads on its platform, after testing 30-minute video uploads in January this year. The 60-minute video upload feature is now available to a select group of TikTok users in select markets. However, the company says that it has no immediate plans to make this feature available to all users.

The new moves mark a departure from TikTok’s initial strategy, in which it created a space for short video uploads. Originally, the program only allowed users to upload 15-second videos, with the threshold increased several times. It’s pretty clear that TikTok has been slow to embrace the option of uploading longer content. This length limit does not exist on YouTube, the leading media content platform.

TikTok says it continues to push for greater breadth to allow creators to convey their messages more poignantly when necessary. Some content, such as cooking demos, lesson plans, comedy, and more, may require more than the available limit to get the message across. The deal will also allow full-length TV shows to be uploaded to the platform.

While TikTok encourages creators to tell viewers to move on to the next part of the story, the viewer doesn’t always get the second part. In such scenarios, the overall message is lost due to seemingly missing content. Therefore, the increased time limit gives creators more flexibility to try new or expanded content types. Perhaps TikTok is hoping that creators will post their longer content on YouTube and post it on TikTok as well.

TikTok is also working on other features to improve the app experience. It was reportedly testing landscape full-screen mode and video thumbnails. The app currently has a fast forward feature that allows the user to fast forward the video by holding the right part of the video. There is no specific information on how the user sample for the new 60-minute download feature was selected. It is also unknown how long the tests will take.
