Microsoft updated its support website to make it clearer current state of Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, three operating systems that can be considered veterans considering the time that has passed since they were released. Of course, the most interesting part is Windows 10, which still has support and is the system that many cling to because Windows 11 won’t convince them.

We appreciate that the Redmond-based corporation is being transparent about this issue, especially when they see how important it is at the security level, since an unsupported operating system is very tempting for malicious actors, since security flaws are not fixed. The company said the following about Windows 10: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will stop providing security updates and support for Windows 10. Your Windows PC will still work, but we recommend upgrading to Windows 11“.

The Windows 10 end-of-life message is accompanied by some links that show the alleged advantages of the next version of the system. The many incidents it causes, the worse performance many get, and the high feature level requirements (at least if we stick to the official terms) make many reluctant to upgrade to Windows 11 if they must be able to.

In Windows 8.1, the message reads: “Change can be difficult, but we’re here to help you take the next step. After January 10, 2023, Microsoft will stop providing security updates and support for Windows 8.1. You may be able to upgrade your Windows 8.1 device to a newer version of Windows, but we recommend upgrading to a new Windows 11 PCbecause it’s a better option.”

We find two things in the Windows 8.1 report. First, Microsoft mentions the traditional resistance to change that its users have shown, which has often made it difficult for them to implement more revolutionary changes. The second is the aforementioned recommendation to restore computers to use a newer version of Windows, a policy that lacks meaning and is solely aimed at creating garbage. Is your old Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 PC still running great? For your security, we strongly recommend giving Linux a chance.

And when it comes to Windows 7, Microsoft has this to say: “After ten years, security updates and support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020. We know change can be difficult, but we’re here to help you take the next step with ease.” Here we find essentially the same dynamics as in Windows 8.1.

Users will find a section on the website dedicated to the Program. An enhanced security program that reaches end users for the first time except for enterprise customers, though Microsoft has only revealed details for the latter so far. End-user terms should be published before October 2025, the month in which regular support for Windows 10 ends.
