At least 25 people died, some of them minors.in case of fire in amusement park This Saturday in western India, officials said the search for possible victims was still underway.
“The fire is under control. We are trying to recover as many bodies as possible.
“So far, around 25 bodies have been recovered and sent to the hospital for further investigation,” Commissioner of Police Raju Bhargava said in a media statement.
The tragedy occurred in GTO play area, an amusement park in the city of Rajkot, Gujarat, with many playgrounds, mainly for minors and youth.
The owners of the properties were taken to the police station for questioning, said police, who do not currently know the cause of the fire.
In a statement to the newspaper Indian ExpressDistrict Administrator Prabhav Joshi assured that most of the victims were minorsalthough he did not elaborate.
Vapors are still emanating from the rubble and we fear that more people may be trapped under them.
Rajkot Mayor Naina Pedhadiya said that the playground, a two-storey tin shed, did not have an operating certificate (NOC, No Objection Certificate) from the City Fire Department.
“We are going to investigate how such a large playground operated without a fire at the NOC and we are witnessing its consequences (…) This is no small incident,” Pedhadiya said from the scene of the tragedy.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed “extreme concern about the fire in Rajkot,” while assuring that local authorities are paying every possible attention to the injured and families of the victims. (EFE)
