Coom, a mythical video game that began the shooting era in the early 1990s, is coincidentally the most sporting title in history since developers insisted on running it on any platform (or other games). Now comes another of the most unusual: CoreDoom or whatever, Doom in the BIOS.

The key is in the release of the new version of the free Coreboot 4.17 firmware. If you follow us regularly, you will know that this is a project supported by the Free Software Foundation, which aims to replace non – free firmware BIOS / UEFI, which are – unfortunately – mostly proprietary.

The coreboot (originally called LinuxBIOS) is a free, open source, lightweight and customizable development because it supports numerous extensions known as payload, which add functionality to minimal Coreboot code and, along with several supported operating systems and bootloaders, complete a very interesting development.

CoreDoom, Doom in BIOS

Using these ‘benefits’ Coreboot added Doom like other supported gamesbecause we have to name others that came earlier, such as Grub Invaders and Tint, clones of other no less mythical titles like Space Invaders and Tetris.

CoreDoom is based on DoomGeneric, a portable version of the original 1993 FPS. It also includes Doom WAD files in the same ROM to improve performance. Development is at an early stage and has several limitations.

Currently requires a PS2 keyboard for WASD movement keys, video format support is limited, no sound is heard, game or configuration file storage is not supported, and the system hangs when the game exits. Obviously, there are better platforms to enjoy the original Doom, however It is strange that it can also be run from the BIOS firmware.
