The American company Sikorsky, part of the defense concern Lockheed Martin, reported flight tests of the prototype of a fixed-wing vertical takeoff and landing drone capable of operating in all weather conditions from ships or land. The device is being developed within the scope of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) program of the US Department of Defense.
The aim of the tests was to prove the effectiveness of a two-propeller fixed-wing prototype UAV configuration that could sit on its tail during landing and easily switch to horizontal mode after takeoff to perform a variety of tasks.
If DARPA chooses Sikorsky’s development for the program’s next round of funding, engineers will build a 136-kilogram prototype capable of carrying a 27-kilogram payload.
