Philips 49B2U6900CH review: Breeeeeed is not too wide

If you like to work with the largest possible screen and value a tidy workspace and advanced video options, the Philips 49B2U6900CH monitor is the right choice for you.

When we think of UltraWide curved screens, we quickly think of gaming monitors, but the Philips 49B2U6900CH has everything it takes to be a solid business monitor. With no less than 49 inches of excellent image quality, you get two full-fledged monitors in one. The brand paid great attention to the webcam, which has a 5.0 megapixel camera, busylight and autoframing on board. You have to pay the price of 1249 euros including VAT, even though you get two monitors in one.

All screens

For a moment I felt as if I was imagining myself in NASA’s headquarters. A huge screen that took up almost the entire length of my desk seemed too big at first glance. But how big can a monitor be before it really becomes too big?

Although the Philips 49B2U6900CH monitor’s work surface is 49 inches (124 cm), it’s actually the equivalent of two 27-inch QHD monitors side by side. And it works well, especially because the screens blend well into one another. You’ll certainly notice this once you switch back to a smaller screen or two separate screens, which also take up more space on your desk.

design

Although the Philips 49B2U6900CH covers a large screen area, the design remains rather sleek. The adjustable webcam is seamlessly integrated into the design and has a convenient pop-up system. During a meeting, the webcam light glows red so your colleagues know you cannot be disturbed, even if they cannot see you behind the strikingly large screen.

This size also takes up a lot of space on your desk, but thankfully it doesn’t come at the expense of your headset space, for which a discreet hanging system is provided on the left side of your monitor. In general, the base of the monitor is stable enough, but if you type vigorously or hang your headphones a little too enthusiastically, the screen tends to wobble slightly.

Connectivity

When it comes to connections, Philips is very generous with its 490B2U6900CH monitor. The available connection options for video include 2x HDMI (v2.0), 1x DisplayPort (v1.4) and 2x USB-C (PD up to 100 watts). For USB connectivity, you have 3x USB-C and 4x USB-A available, all USB 3.2 Gen 2 compatible with up to 10 Gbit/s. Finally, there is a jack connection and 1x RJ45 (2.5 GbE).

Thanks to the built-in KVM function, this docking monitor can switch between three systems by quickly pressing CTRL on your keyboard three times. Finally, you can connect your laptop with a single USB-C cable and the monitor delivers 100 watts, which is more than enough to charge a laptop.

Display quality

The fact that the screen is big enough has already been emphasized enough, but what about its quality? The 49-inch VA screen has a resolution of 5120 x 1440, which produces a nice, sharp image. In addition, the subtle curvature ensures that you have a good image from every angle of your eye.

The large screen is also very flexible and can be rotated 30 degrees to the left or right, tilted forward or backward, and adjusted in height by 150 mm. These many options make the screen ergonomic and perfectly adaptable to your needs. The panel is DisplayHDR 400 certified and features Soft Blue technology. This reduces the amount of blue light the screen exposes your eyes to, although this is mostly marketing talk.

There is only good to say about the image quality of the Philips 490B2U6900CH. When looking at the DeltaE values, the brand positively surprised us. We measured a white balance of 1.4 and a color balance of 1.2, which remains below the magic limit of 2. This is excellent quality for office applications and will even appeal to graphics professionals. We also measured a high contrast of 2,880:1 and a color gamut of 121.8 percent sRGB and 86.2 percent DCI-P3.

Agile Webcam

Philips paid a lot of attention to the webcam, which breaks up the slim design with a pop-up system and is equipped with a 5.0 megapixel camera and a microphone. The movable webcam can be adjusted 30 degrees forwards or backwards and signals surrounding colleagues with red LED lighting (busy light) when you are in a video call.

These video meetings are also feasible with several people. The frame automatically adjusts to the number of people. An additional plus is that it enables Windows Hello, which means you can log in easily using facial recognition.

Diploma

The Philips 49B2U6900CH monitor has many features on board that professional users will appreciate. The useful professional features and the excellent screen quality ensure a pleasant user experience.

If you’re looking for the largest possible monitor with a smart webcam for the office, the Philips 49B2U6900CH monitor is the right choice. If you’re happy with two separate screens, your wallet will be happy too.
