Apple has reportedly signed a deal with OpenAI to provide a chatbot for iOS 18. Google Gemini is being considered as a backup plan.
The latest software update for the iPhone, iOS 18, should add a lot of AI functionality. According to Bloomberg, Apple has signed an agreement with OpenAI to provide a chatbot in iOS 18 and the latest iPhone devices, which are traditionally announced in September.
Which AI features Apple is working on is expected to be revealed during WWDC on June 10. The latest features of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS will be presented at its developer conference. Developers have free access to WWDC.
Despite the deal with OpenAI, Apple is reportedly keeping all options open. It is said that it is still in talks with Google to offer Gemini as an option. It is still unclear whether Gemini will also be presented as an option during WWDC.
It is also unclear whether Apple will present its own AI model at WWDC. The first rumors about Ajax, an LLM model that is supposed to replace Siri, date back to last summer. Apple has not yet said a word about its AI ambitions.
We’ll have to wait until WWDC to get the official details on Apple’s AI ambitions.
