President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, recalled its ambassador to Israel and sent him as his special representative to Geneva. in the midst of a diplomatic spat between both countriespublished today in the official newspaper of Brazil.

Frederico Meyer’s departure came a few months after Lula called him back to Brazil. Meyer’s refusal occurred after Israeli Foreign MinisterIsrael Katz will call Meyer to tell him that Lula is persona non grata in the Middle Eastern country.

Israel’s measure was related to Lula’s statements in which he compared Israel’s war against Gaza to the Holocaust.

Since then, Meyer has not returned to Israel.

Now will be Brazil’s special representative to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva.

According to the official bulletin, no replacement has been appointed to serve in Israel. Brazil’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Israel is struggling to root out Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, following a cross-border militant attack on Oct. 7 that killed about 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostage, according to Israeli estimates. It is believed that about 130 hostages remain captive in the Gaza Strip.
