Google Chrome makes it easier to work in multiple tabs at once. Links that you open from Gmail now “float” above your active tab.

Links you receive via email can sometimes be distracting because they open in a full-screen tab. Here, Google is adapting a wrapper for Chrome and Gmail. With an update to its popular browsers, Google is introducing picture-in-picture windows for opened links. This way, you can view the content of the link without being redirected from your inbox.

Floating windows

In a blog post, Google shows how it works with a short GIF. When you open a link in Gmail, you can click the down arrow to minimize the window you’re currently opening. The link’s tab will float in a compact window-in-window view that you can drag anywhere on your screen.

The window will remain floating until you finish reading the email and want to view the content in full size. All you have to do is click on the window to enlarge it. Google previously tested this functionality on Android and is now rolling it out to other versions of the Chrome browsers.

The feature is enabled by default in Chrome. Google is making this update at the browser level, so other browsers that share the Chromium engine (like Edge) will have to introduce this feature themselves.

Google had big news to announce for Chromebook users earlier this week. The ChromeOS operating system is getting a major AI update with the introduction of Gemini and other AI features. To enjoy this AI fun, you’ll need a Chromebook Plus laptop. Thankfully, that’s not the case with this Chrome functionality.
