We usually think of two main mapping apps for Android Auto; the legendary Google Maps and Waze, but the truth is there is life beyond that. And OsmAnd is a good example of the potential outside of Google: open source app offers free offline navigation and numerous other functions. It is also compatible with Android Auto.

In my particular case, when I go out on the street there is often a fight: I prefer Google Maps, while my partner prefers Waze. To avoid navigational conflicts, I experimented with the apps until I came across alternatives that offered additional benefits to the two larger apps: download map. Here WeGo is a good choice, but now there is another one that has conquered us: OsmAnd. Perfect for Android Auto.

OsmAnd is a great alternative to Google Maps, Waze, Sygic, Here, TomTom and other navigation apps compatible with Android Auto: in addition to complete downloads of a wide range of maps, topographies, extra services and regions to the phone, OsmAnd offers travel guides, real-time traffic and even weather. A complete summary of the functions, most of which are free; Although it also includes subscription.

Leaving aside functions other than Android Auto, OsmAnd offers full compatibility with on-screen point-to-point navigation, features voice guidance, points of interest, navigation history and even a speedometer. Speedometer is one of the latest additions to OsmAnd: Appears on the map as a floating widget showing the actual speed at which the vehicle is moving.

Latest OsmAnd update introduces speedometer to Android Auto

In my experience it is an excellent app that works perfectly on Android Auto. Yes I miss a better design for car maps, OsmAnd takes the style and cartography of OpenStreetMap. Otherwise provides excellent service and Works perfectly when there is no mobile connection. For example, to travel abroad by car: just download the areas you will drive to your mobile phone (OsmAnd 7 supports free map download).

Free for most services, developed as open source, super complete, compatible with Android Auto and offers advanced functions; both for cars and for example for adventure sports enthusiasts. I think it is highly recommended to keep it on your mobile phone just in case. Even to use instead of Maps or Waze: OsmAnd has little to envy them. And it can be downloaded from Google Play.
