The Chinese Chanye-6 spacecraft will attempt to land on the surface of the Earth’s natural satellite on the night of June 1-2, 2024. Its main goal is to carry out the first mission to return samples from the far side of the Moon.

According to the plan of the Chinese mission, the module is supposed to leave the orbital compartment on the night from Saturday to Sunday, which will land in the 2,500-kilometer-diameter impact crater of the South Pole – the Aitken Basin. There, the lander must collect about two kilograms of regolith, or lunar rocks and mineral fragments.

The module will remain on the far side of the Moon for 48 hours, after which the liftoff stage of the instrument containing regolith samples will lift off from the surface and re-docker to the orbital probe, where the regolith will be reloaded. . After that, the orbiter will return to Earth. Scientists hope that soil samples will help solve the mystery of the asymmetry in the lunar hemispheres.
