Viber is one of the world’s leading communication platforms focused on the security of user data. Messenger has successfully passed SOC 2 Type II (System Organization Control) security certification.

SOC is a framework designed to assess and manage data security. SOC 2 certification is aimed at SaaS (Software as a Service) companies, that is, companies that provide their software as an ongoing service. Type II tests all defense systems for a certain period of time (3 months to a year).

Evaluation criteria include:

• Security
• Accessibility.
• Privacy.
• Integrity of data processing.
• Data privacy.

SOC was developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). In the United States, it is the AICPA that sets ethical and auditing standards.

The audit was performed by Ernst & Young. The audit confirmed that all of Viber’s security practices, procedures, operations and policies meet SOC 2 standards.

In addition to SOC 2 compliance, Rakuten Viber offers a number of improvements to its infrastructure, such as additional layers of information backup and improved platform monitoring. Also in 2016, Viber became one of the first major messengers to implement end-to-end encryption by default for all personal and group chats and calls.
