Donald Trump has confirmed that the trial in which he was found guilty of falsifying documents was a “disgrace” and confirmed that the true verdict will be reached in the presidential election.
“It was a shame. “This was a rigged trial conducted by a corrupt, corrupt judge,” Trump told reporters after the verdict was announced.
“The real verdict will be made by the people on November 5th,” Trump said, adding: “I am a very innocent man.”
Judge Juan Merchan will hand down the verdict on July 11, four days before the start of the Republican National Convention, which is expected to formally nominate Trump for president.
Merchan thanked the jury for their service.
The verdict plunges the United States into uncharted territory ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election, when Trump, the Republican nominee, will try to win the White House from Democratic President Joe Biden.
Trump, 77, denies wrongdoing and is expected to appeal the decision.
He faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison, although others convicted of the crime typically receive shorter sentences, fines or probation. A prison sentence will not prevent him from campaigning or taking office if he wins the election.
