Snowflake introduces the manufacturer-independent Polaris catalog

Snowflake introduces the Polaris Catalog, a vendor-neutral implementation of the catalog functionality in Apache Iceberg that will soon be available as open source.

At its Snowflake Summit in San Francisco, the company is introducing the Polaris Catalog, a vendor-neutral, open implementation of the catalog functionality for Apache Iceberg.

Polaris Catalog uses the open source Rest protocol, giving users access to data from any system that supports the Icebert Rest API, including Apache Flink and Spark, Dremio, Pythin, Trino, and more.

Open-Source

“The Polaris catalog will be open source within the next 90 days,” says new CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy. Snowflake wants to give customers who use Iceberg the ability to use all of the associated features without vendor lock-in. The Polaris catalog works with providers such as AWS, GCP, Microsoft Azure, and Salesforce.

Snowflake has been using Apache Iceberg’s open table format since 2022. Since then, it has been possible to work with Iceberg tables within Snowflake. Since then, the company has continued to support the open source community. The next step was the introduction of the Polaris Catalog.
