Justin Long doesn’t want to be (or have) a Mac anymore

If communication campaigns mention a rival’s “blood production” in the sector, that’s without a doubt Justin Long. Now, chances are you don’t know who I’m talking about. And what’s worse, because it makes me feel very old, is that if you’re very young, even insultingly young, it’s quite likely that the link I give you to let “mine” know who he is will also make you will leave a bit like you

Hello, I’m the same David who wrote the previous paragraph, but after spending ten minutes taking a deep breath to relax, I’m willing to put the age question aside to get back to the focus of the news. Of course, a heartfelt, even friendly request, don’t be so young, envy is eating me up. Of course, at least I can say that I do not deny what I was in my youth. Yes, about some stupidity, of course, but not about the person I was, which is more than Justin Long can say, probably switch further switch who knows history.

In the middle of the first decade of this century, with the return of Steve Jobs a few years earlier and the huge turnaround the company had made with him as the captain, Apple climbed out of the hole and returned to the top thanks to its iMac. MacOS X and especially the iPod. And so, and a company that wants to take a big bite out of Microsoft and the entire Windows PC ecosystem, Cupertino is launching one of the most damaging, funniest and memorable advertising campaigns. A campaign in which Justin Long claimed to be a mac:

These were the days of Windows Vista, so anyone will understand that this gave Apple an advantage, and you only need to look at them briefly to see that they used it to great effect. The campaign also played a trick on a much more casual, casual image, a much more youthful vibe (we’ll be back with these…). Finally what Being a Mac was cool, very cool, and being a Windows Vista PC was grey, sad, boring….

It gave a lot to talk about and it wasn’t too difficult. see the representation of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs in actors who played on Windows Vista PC and Mac. It was a coincidence? Does each person’s perception matter? Or maybe Jobs himself had something to do with it, taking the opportunity to get rid of what happened with Gates at the 1997 MacWorld Expo? (If you don’t know what I mean, I’ll tell you at the end of this article). I don’t know about you, but I picture Jobs carefully designing a campaign with more or less this face:

Justin Long doesn't want to be (or have) a Mac anymore

The iMac phenomenon was just the beginning, then came iBooks, which later became MacBooks, Apple computers (desktop and laptop) reached more users than ever, the iPhone was the architect of its numbers elevating it to the altars… well, you know the story and brings us to the current moment, where despite some challenges it has to face, it continues to be one of the companies with the highest level of market capitalization and with an image worth millions, literally. And until 2010, Long was part of the construction of this image.

In 2020, as you will recall, Apple announced Apple Silicon, i.e. parting ways with Intel, quite a significant blow for the processor giant, which was also not experiencing the best of times at the time. However, albeit on a smaller scale, they decided to strike back at Apple. As? So again with Justin Long. just this time actor formerly known as “I’m Mac”he took sides again in this confrontation, just… well, you better watch the video

Justin Long, who at the time was a sort of alter ego of Steve Jobs, embodying the technological pinnacle that was the iMac G3 at the time, starred in a series of videos (now mostly hidden by Intel on YouTube) in which Emphasis was placed on the advantages of the Intel+Windows ecosystem compared to Apple. I wonder if Apple’s legal department did a thorough review of the contracts signed for the “I’m a Mac” campaign, but since we didn’t have one, we understand they found nothing They don’t.

How is it, good old Long, the human Mac, he seemed to have found his new preferred platform, in which it could be understood to establish and endure. Intel was its new architecture his new home, based on the weird stuff with ARM and the stuff Apple got into, his thing was the experience, reliability and versatility of x86/64. With Windows, of course, we have no news of them being prompted to try Linux at some point.

And so things are… or so it was until Qualcomm’s presentation at Computex 2024. Yes, the presentation in which we had official confirmation that the Snapdragon X will reach all PC forms, that is, it will make the leap to the desktop. A presentation which, as we have already told you, was not particularly remarkable (neither good nor bad, neither hot nor cold) but which they reserved the surprise practically for the end. You can see it below:

Go! It’s good old Justin Long with his Mac (he seems to be back on track), he just seems a little annoyed with the notifications and some error messages. But then we see that he entered a web search engine to find… what? as? LOOKING FOR A PC WITH SNAPDRAGON SOC!? what happened justin What happened to the Intel computers you liked so much in 2021 that seemed to be your choice? Will Intel’s lawyers now revise the contract documents for the 2021 campaign they did with Long? Will Apple agree to file a class action lawsuit against the actor?

One of the big problems the free software ecosystem faces is having tighter budgets than those of large multinationals, but wouldn’t it be great if Canonical has invested in a campaign in which Justin Long admits that actually hardware is the least important thing and that what he likes is Linux.? I don’t know about you, I’d pay to see it.
