Data blocks

In an interestingly timed announcement, Databricks announces that it is purchasing Tabular with the goal of developing an open lakehouse format.

Databricks buys Tabular. Tabular is a data management company founded by Ryan Blue, Daniel Weeks and Jason Reid. It’s no coincidence that these are the driving forces behind Apache Iceberg: an open tabular format critical to open data storage, and Delta Lake.

The timing of the acquisition announcement is therefore no coincidence. Databricks shared the news at about the same time as its main competitor Snowflake’s product keynote, where the general availability of Iceberg Tables and the introduction of the Polaris catalog were a key topic.

The race to open data management seems to have begun, with Snowflake and Databricks tackling the problem from their own perspectives.

Open lake house

Databricks is looking to work with Tabular to bring both Iceberg and Delta Lake into the lakehouse. The goal is to establish a single open standard for collaboration to achieve an open lakehouse.

Databricks notes that it wants to support both Delta Lake and Iceberg, not just one of them. The company wants to break down silos.
