Windows 10’s File Explorer is still present in Windows 11, albeit hidden from prying eyes. And Windows is full of legacy code, and under the hood we find components that date back to Windows 95. This is the result of supporting a monstrous ecosystem in hardware and software.
Start of lesson. Microsoft rose to the task restore file explorer its operating system and new features were specified with the arrival of cards; order execution; a modern home page powered by WinUI; contextual menus; activation of the Fluent Design design language in all controls and styles; new icons; a new gallery section or better integration with the system interface itself.
Paper interesting news, some requested by users. The problem in Windows 11, as in other parts of the system, is performance, which can be improved… because it is soft. In addition to the busy interface, Microsoft insisted on destroying it with ads and integration of its services (such as OneDrive), which eventually slows everything down. If you are using Windows 11 but don’t want to suffer, you can use Windows 10 explorer. You won’t get the fancy tabs or the WinUI redesign, but it’ll be worth it: it’s much faster, more responsive, and more stable.
Third-party applications and various tricks were already known, including tapping the system registry to improve the execution of the explorer or directly reverting to the previous version, but a developer on reddit posted a way to activate it without needing any of it.
All you have to do is open it Control Panel, and then go to System and Security > Windows Tools. Strangely enough, opening Windows Tools brings up the explorer interface, and clicking on any of the drives and folders in the left pane brings back the Windows 10 file explorer.
The interesting thing is that this method does not require any tricks that could disturb the stability of the system. nor does it replace the modern Windows 11 File Explorer, which you can continue to use as usual. Interestingly, if you restore an old version while a modern version is already open, the former will simply open in a new window. This means that you can compare them, although, as we said, Windows 10’s File Explorer has the advantage of its higher performance and stability.
